ShareSun Midnight Sun by Sara Watkins
First Listen: Sara Watkins ‘Sun’
The Current: Sara Watkins in the Current Studios
Singer, songwriter, fiddle player Sara Watkins was only eight when she, her brother Sean, and Chris Thile started Nickel Creek. The Grammy Award–winning acoustic trio spent nearly two decades winning fans with their innovative, genre-bending style before calling an indefinite hiatus a couple of years ago. Now Sara has struck out on her own. And while she had been thinking for some time about doing a solo recording project, the notion has finally become reality: This spring, she released her second album, Sun Midnight Sun, produced by Blake Mills and features guest appearances by Fiona Apple, Jackson Browne, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Benmont Tench, and Sean Watkins.
Sun Midnight Sun includes songs written by Watkins, several collaborations with Mills, songs by Dan Wilson and Willie Nelson, and a rendition of The Everly Brothers classic “You’re the One I Love,” a duet with Fiona Apple.

NPR First Listen First Listen: Norah Jones, ‘Little Broken Hearts’
Ten years after her debut, Jones is ideally positioned for the subtle sonic makeover she undergoes on Little Broken Hearts. Written and recorded with Burton, who as producer gives the album a sonic edge that never overwhelms its star, Little Broken Hearts sounds like Norah Jones without bearing much resemblance to the work that once got her pegged as the world’s most commercially dominant jazz star.
Radio Music Society by Esperanza Spalding
Weekend Edition: Jazz as ‘Radio Music’ First Listen: Radio Music Society
These are good times for Esperanza Spaulding. She was barely in her 20s when the bass player, composer and vocalist released her debut record on a Spanish label in 2006. Her breakout CD, “Esperanza,” in 2008 topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart. Not long after that, she was invited to play at the White House by President Obama. Last year, she was the first jazz musician to be named Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, much to the chagrin of Justin Bieber and legions of tweens. Esperanza Spaulding’s new CD is called “Radio Music Society,” and it comes out on Tuesday.
